On March 7, 2009, she was found dead at her home in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province. After Jang Ja Yeon died, authorities discovered that she left a 230-page notebook revealing that she was forced by entertainment bosses to “hosted 31 customers over 100 times”.
Jang Ja Yeon on a rare occasion wore beautiful clothes to the red carpet at the premiere of the movie Meteor Garden. To get a chance to act, she had to accept serving drinks, serving VIP guests in karaoke rooms or party places in Gangnam or Suwon. According to Yoon Ji Oh, she witnessed firsthand how Jang Ja Yeon was forced to sit on a big man’s lap and was abused.
“Every time I change into a new dress, it means I have to receive a demon again,” Jang Ja Yeon wrote in the discovered notebook. The incident happened from 2005 to 2009, when Jang Ja Yeon passed away.
However, there are many unanswered questions surrounding the actress’ death. There is information that her fingerprints were not found on the detected text. Moreover, netizens said that it is absurd that the actress also did not leave a will or suicide note through a trusted person. In addition, Jang Ja Yeon belongs to the same management company as Choi Jin Sil, UNee, and Jung Dabin. They are all believed to have committed suicide. This made the public suspicious, thinking that there was a twist about these deaths.
Jang Ja Yeon’s funeral in 2009 attracted the attention of the media and public because of the complicated nature of the case. Both the main cast and supporting cast of Boys Over Flowers were present to see her off.
But behind the crying tears, fans feel that the dirty secrets of the Korean entertainment industry are still being covered and buried. “Before she died, she had suffered enough humiliation,” said one of Jang Ja Yeon’s younger brothers.
“A truth panel concluded in 2019 that the prosecution did not properly investigate the 2009 suicide of an actress who claimed to have been sexually abused by high-profile figures and that a major newspaper allegedly attempted to influence the investigation.
The panel, however, stopped short of recommending a reinvestigation of the case.
The suicide of rookie actress Jang Ja-yeon was one of the six cases the independent panel, commissioned by the justice ministry, added to a list for reinvestigation in April 2019, arguing that the truth of such cases has not been fully uncovered.
Jang hanged herself in her house and left a suicide note saying she was forced by her entertainment agency to attend drinking parties and provide sex to at least 30 men, including the head of the Chosun Ilbo, a major newspaper. With her suicide note, Jang also allegedly left a list of men she says she was forced to provide sexual services to.
After reviewing a 250-page report on the outcome of a 13-month probe by a special prosecution team, the panel said it could not confirm the existence of Jang’s list.
The panel also concluded the prosecution unduly decided not to file charges against some suspects and that probes by the prosecution and police were flawed.
In August 2009, the prosecution only filed to indict the chief of an entertainment agency Jang belonged to and Jang’s assistant.
But those alleged to have forced her to provide sexual services were not charged.
The panel judged that it has not identified evidence sufficient to carry out probes into alleged sexual abuses involving more than two people or allegations of injury caused by sexual assault. It only asked the prosecution to reinvestigate the chief of Jang’s management agency, identified only by his surname Kim, over suspected perjury.
The inquiry team looked into whether there Jang’s list exists, and if there was any outside pressure to close the case.
In March 2019, President Moon Jae-in ordered a thorough investigation into Jang’s death .”
