On July 25, Wikitree reported that the National Human Rights Commission of Korea announced it had received a complaint and would open an investigation into the incident involving actor Byeon Woo Seok’s abuse of power at the airport.
In a notice sent to the complainant, the agency stated that the investigation process and conclusions surrounding the excessively strict protective measures, which were deemed to infringe upon and affect citizens’ rights in public places by Byeon Woo Seok, would take about three months.
Earlier, online users had filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of Korea regarding Byeon Woo Seok’s scandal at Incheon Airport. In the complaint, the accuser stated, “Byeon Woo Seok is embroiled in controversy due to excessive security measures, including controlling the gate for 10 minutes, checking tickets, and shining flashlights on ordinary passengers who only happened to look at the actor. I filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission through the national petition platform. These actions are human rights violations.”
The controversy over Byeon Woo Seok’s abuse of power originated from an overseas trip on his schedule. At Incheon Airport, Byeon Woo Seok’s security team arbitrarily blocked the airport gate for about 10 minutes, checked passengers’ tickets and passports, and shined flashlights towards people around to prevent filming and photography. The video capturing the security team’s overly cautious behavior, once posted online, sparked public outrage. The public was indignant at the misconduct, which affected those around due to the actions of the star’s security company. However, many viewers aimed their criticism at Byeon Woo Seok, accusing the actor of having a star complex that led him to demand such strict security measures.
Subsequently, the head of the security company and Byeon Woo Seok’s management company both issued apologies for causing public discomfort. However, this action did not quell the public’s anger. Although it has not been concluded whether the incident was due to Byeon Woo Seok’s request or the security company’s excessive actions, it has significantly damaged the rising star’s reputation. According to Skyedaily, following the abuse of power scandal, several brands have removed Byeon Woo Seok from their final candidate list or temporarily suspended cooperation with him.
