The True Cause of Sulli’s Death
Sulli, born Choi Jin-ri in 1994, entered the entertainment industry in 2005 as a child actress. Her role as young Princess Seon Hwa in SBS’s historical drama Ballad of Seo Dong served as a stepping stone to fame. Thanks to her talent and striking beauty, she caught the attention of SM Entertainment and signed a contract with the company.
After debuting in 2009, Sulli became one of the most prominent idols of K-pop’s third generation. Her group, f(x), was among the most successful girl groups, and she was one of the most popular members with a massive fan following.
However, starting in September 2013, Sulli began showing signs of distress and loss of focus. In 2014, while at the peak of her career, she was publicly exposed for dating Choiza, a senior artist 14 years older than her. The relationship was heavily criticized, with many branding it as inappropriate.
In November 2016, Korean media reported that Sulli had been rushed to the hospital due to a suicide attempt by cutting her wrist. SM Entertainment later stated that it was an accidental injury. However, many netizens speculated that she had attempted suicide following her breakup with Choiza. Throughout various reality TV shows, Sulli had expressed distress and made subtle cries for help, but they were largely ignored.
On October 14, 2019, at the age of 25, Sulli ended her life, leaving her family, friends, and fans in deep sorrow. Her tragic death was believed to be a result of extreme online harassment and malicious comments. After a thorough investigation, the police confirmed that she had taken her own life.
