Park Bo Gum: From a Debt-Burdened Orphan to a Star Beside IU
Overcoming a Turbulent Childhood and Financial Struggles
Born in 1993, Park Bo Gum lost his mother at age 10. At 15, his father took out a massive loan using Park’s name, resulting in an 800 million won debt after the business failed. Unable to repay the debt as a rookie actor, Park filed for bankruptcy. As a minor unaware of the debt, the court reduced his penalty to 30 million won.
Initially dreaming of becoming a singer, Park began learning piano at age 5. In 11th grade, he auditioned for SM, JYP, and YG but eventually signed with SidusHQ, where he discovered his passion for acting.
A Breakthrough in Acting and Music
After four years of minor roles, Park left SidusHQ for Blossom Entertainment, leading to his breakout role as Choi Taek in Reply 1988. His career soared further with Love in the Moonlight, gaining fame across Asia.
Known for his sweet voice, Park sang My Person for Love in the Moonlight, topping music charts. In 2020, he released his first Japanese album Blue Bird and All My Love for his fans before enlisting in the military. Now with The Black Label, Park explores music further, recently accompanying Taeyang of BIGBANG in the song Seed.
Scandals and New Successes
Despite no severe scandals, Park faced dating rumors with Hyeri, Jang Na Ra, and even speculation of involvement in Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki’s divorce after Encounter.
His role as Gwan Sik in When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025) alongside IU earned praise for his portrayal of a devoted husband. Their duet, A Country Boy’s Love Story, quickly trended on YouTube Korea.
In a recent interview with Elle, Park shared, “Positivity is something I was born with. I always try to give my best.” Gong Yoo praised his responsibility and quiet perseverance.
With an estimated net worth of $15 million and annual ad revenue of 8.5 billion won, Park Bo Gum remains a versatile artist—whether as an actor who sings or a singer who acts, he shines in his own unique way.
