Olympic champion Carlos Yulo’s family didn’t celebrate his 25th birthday amid ongoing rift, says girlfriend
Content creator Chloe San Jose, girlfriend of Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo, revealed that the athlete’s family neither greeted nor celebrated him on his 25th birthday, prompting the couple to exclude them from Yulo’s birthday celebrations.

As San Jose, 23, shared a post on Facebook commemorating Yulo’s birthday, featuring photos of the couple holding a cake, some social media users pointed out the absence of Yulo’s family.
“He really didn’t invite his family,” one user commented.
San Jose responded, saying: “Why would you invite people to your birthday when they don’t even bother making an effort to greet and celebrate you?”
“If you want those kinds of guests at your birthday, then you can invite them yourself, sis,” she added.
Another user remarked: “You’re having fun, but you don’t pay attention to your parents… happy.”
“Yes sis, Caloy is happy, which makes y’all haters shake and your blood boil lmao,” San Jose replied. “Well, have you thought about whether his relatives even acknowledge or greet Caloy? The double standard.”
Caloy is a common nickname for Carlos in the Philippines.
San Jose’s comments suggested that the rift between Yulo and his family remains unresolved. It was first publicized when Yulo posted a video on TikTok in Aug. 2024, accusing his mother of mismanaging his finances, misleading him about gymnastics incentives, and falsely accusing San Jose of financial exploitation.
Angelica Poquiz Yulo held a press conference the following day, expressing remorse and explaining her actions as stemming from concern for her children’s financial security.
“The money was given to me,” she said at the press conference, according to The New York Post. “As a mother, I was worried that my child might have financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name.”
Despite an offer of a 5 million Philippine peso (US$87,192) gift from former Filipino politician and businessman Chavit Singson to encourage reconciliation between Yulo and his mother, the family rift persists.
It is also worth noting that Angelica Poquiz Yulo did not publicly celebrate Yulo’s Olympic victories, though she supported her other son Eldrew Yulo at the 3rd JRC Artistic Gymnastics Stars Championships in Thailand in Nov. 2024.
At 24, Carlos is hailed as the most decorated Filipino gymnast in history, according to Forbes. He made history at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, becoming the first Filipino athlete to win two gold medals at a single Olympics, in the floor exercise and vault events.
