Korean Stars Mourn At Lengendary K-drama “Evil Mother In Law” Kim Soo-mi’s Funeral
On the morning of October 27th, a funeral service for Kim Soo-mi was held at Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. Attendees included her husband, Jung Chang-gyu, her son, CEO Jung Myung-ho, daughter-in-law, actress Seo Hyo-rim, and granddaughter, along with many colleagues from the entertainment industry who had a close relationship with her.
A Christian service was conducted in honor of the late actress, and the pallbearers included comedians/TV personality Jung Joon-ha, Yoon Jung-soo, and Jang Dong-min, as well as Moon Tae-joo, the PD of Soo-mi’s Side Dishes. When the coffin was brought in, the sound of sobbing filled the air. Jung Joon-ha wiped his eyes with a handkerchief, Yoon Jung-soo had a somber expression, and Jang Dong-min couldn’t hold back his tears.
The portrait used for the funeral was the actress’ photo from the 2011 movie Late Blossom poster, showing her bright, cheerful smile that reminded everyone of the vibrant personality she had. Her daughter-in-law, Seo Hyo-rim, who always called her “Mom,” cried out, “Mom, I’m sorry, don’t go,” and “How can you leave after all the hardship?” shedding tears. Actresses Lee Sook and Kim Na-eun also cried alongside her.
During the wake, many of her close friends from the entertainment industry paid their respects, including actors Shin Hyun-joon, Yum Jung-ah, Jo In-sung, Choi Ji-woo, Park Eun-soo, Kim Yong-gun, the couple Yoo Dong-geun and Jeon In-hwa, Seo Ji-hye, and Kim Hyung-joon, along with comedian Yoo Jae-suk. Condolence wreaths sent by actors Kim Hye-soo, Lee Deok-hwa, Han Chae-ah, Hong Soo-hyun, Park Jung-chul, Ham Eun-jung, singers Joo Hyun-mi, and Lim Young-woong filled the venue.
Many others, including actress Kim Young-ok, Kang Bu-ja, Yoon Hyun-sook, Hyun Young, Ha Ri-soo, Chef Jung Ji-sun, and Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yoo In-chon, paid tribute to the late actress.
Born in 1949, Kim Soo-mi debuted as an actress through the third open recruitment at MBC in 1970. She was found dead at her home on the morning of the 25th, passing away at the age of 75. The cause of death was reported to be hyperglycemic shock. Her resting place has been arranged at the Honors Stone in Yongin Park, Gyeonggi Province.
