The Sudden Deaths of ‘Meteor Garden’ Stars after 24 years
The unexpected passing of stars from the drama Meteor Garden at such young ages has left fans in shock and sorrow.
Barbie Hsu
On February 3, the Asian entertainment industry was devastated by the sudden passing of actress Barbie Hsu. Her family officially confirmed the news, stating that she passed away at the age of 49 due to complications from the flu and pneumonia while on a trip to Japan earlier this year. Her body was cremated in Japan on February 3, and her ashes were brought back to Taiwan (China) on the afternoon of February 5.
Barbie Hsu’s sudden passing has sparked speculation and conflicting reports. Some sources from China suggested that she died due to septicemia or severe influenza A, leading to multiple organ failure. Many also questioned whether she could have been saved had she been hospitalized and treated in time.
Despite various rumors regarding her health, Barbie Hsu’s family has yet to issue an official response. Their silence has only fueled public curiosity and concern over the true cause of her passing.
Her death is a great loss. She was a talented actress beloved by audiences for her impressive performances. Apart from Meteor Garden, Barbie Hsu starred in many other films and TV dramas, including Summer’s Desire, Mars, and Sword Butterfly. She was regarded as one of the most influential and talented actresses in Chinese entertainment.
Xu Wei Lun (Beatrice Hsu)
Xu Wei Lun was one of Taiwan’s most beloved idols in the early 2000s. Although she only made a brief guest appearance in Meteor Garden, her beauty and talent captivated audiences.
She was also known for her role as the daughter of a tycoon in Love Storm, a drama that led to her real-life romance with actor Vic Chou.
On January 26, 2007, while returning home after filming, Xu Wei Lun’s car was involved in a severe accident on Taiwan’s National Highway No. 1. Her assistant, who was driving, lost control, causing the vehicle to crash into the divider before being hit by a truck from behind. Xu Wei Lun suffered serious injuries, including a coma and brain hemorrhage.
Despite doctors’ best efforts, she passed away on January 28, 2007, at the age of 29. Her death was a tragic loss for Taiwan’s entertainment industry and left fans heartbroken.
Although Xu Wei Lun and Vic Chou had broken up before her passing, the F4 member attended her funeral alongside her grieving family. The sudden loss of his former girlfriend reportedly left him in deep shock.
Xu Hua Feng was well known to Asia audiences for her role as Dao Ming Si’s sister (played by Jerry Yan) in Meteor Garden. Born in 1970, she had previously competed in the Miss China pageant before entering the entertainment industry. Although she only played a supporting role in the drama, she left a lasting impression on viewers.
In 2008, when her career was flourishing, Xu Hua Feng was diagnosed with stage 3 stomach cancer. She had to put her acting career on hold to focus on treatment.
Throughout her battle with cancer, she underwent multiple surgeries and endured 25 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. At times, her condition improved, but out of fear that her husband would leave her, she decided to stop treatment to conceive a child. Unfortunately, this decision led to a relapse, and the cancer spread to her uterus. In a bid to save her life, she underwent a hysterectomy, giving up her dream of motherhood.
On December 6, 2011, after three years of battling cancer, Xu Hua Feng passed away. Her death was deeply mourned by fans and colleagues.
Dai Bing
Dai Bing (real name Yu Bing Xian) was a well-known Taiwanese comedian famous for impersonating celebrities. He had a minor role in Meteor Garden .
In 2012, he passed away at the age of 37 due to multiple organ failure caused by acute pneumonia. Before his death, he had been arrested three times for drug use and was embroiled in controversies regarding same-sex relationships.
An Jun Can
An Jun Can was a multi-talented artist in Taiwan’s entertainment industry, known for being a member of the boy band K-One and hosting various TV shows. He played a friend of Dao Ming Si in Meteor Garden .
In 2013, An Jun Can was diagnosed with liver cancer. Before that, he had been treated for hepatitis B and had a history of cirrhosis. By 2015, his condition worsened, with the cancer spreading to his bones, entering its final stage.
Doctors estimated he had only two months left to live. However, after just two weeks, he suddenly suffered massive stomach bleeding, blood clotting disorders, and severe liver damage.
An Jun Can passed away from cancer at the age of 32.
Knowing his time was limited, he refused further treatment and chose to spend his final days at home. On June 1, 2015, he passed away at the age of 32. It was only after his death that the public, colleagues, and friends learned about his years-long battle with cancer.
An Jun Can was also the person who introduced Barbie Hsu to her ex-husband, businessman Wang Xiaofei. Upon his passing, Barbie Hsu wrote an emotional tribute:
“Dear Jun Can, you kept your illness a secret to avoid worrying others and endured everything alone. Learning about it breaks my heart. Even in your final moments, you remained as thoughtful as ever. To me, you are a true king of acting. Thank you for being part of my life. Forever loving and remembering you. Thank you and goodbye.”
