Male Singer Quietly Erased by the Ministry of National Defense
In early 2026, South Korea and international audiences were shaken by reports that Cha Eun Woo was under investigation by authorities over alleged tax evasion amounting to more than 20 billion won. According to a statement from the National Tax Service (NTS), the artist was ordered to pay a substantial reassessed tax bill amid suspicions that he had established a corporation under a relative’s name to channel income and thereby reduce his tax obligations.
The announcement came while Cha Eun Woo was serving his mandatory military duty, which he began in July 2025, as a member of the military band. He later issued a handwritten apology letter, acknowledging shortcomings in managing his personal finances and pledging full cooperation with investigators to clarify the matter.
The fallout from the scandal spread rapidly. Numerous brands that had previously collaborated with Cha Eun Woo reportedly hid or removed promotional materials featuring him from their media platforms.
Beyond the commercial sector, content related to him within the military was also adjusted. Several clips of Cha Eun Woo performing in the military band were taken down from online platforms. A video from the series “Stories from Those Days in the Military,” produced by KFN Plus — a YouTube channel affiliated with the Defense Media Agency — was removed as well. In the video, Cha Eun Woo appeared in the rank of Private First Class, serving as a narrator introducing historical figures. The move to effectively “erase” his presence is believed to be a temporary measure aimed at limiting controversy surrounding an individual currently under investigation.
Born Lee Dong Min in 1997, Cha Eun Woo debuted in 2016 as a member of the K-pop group ASTRO. In addition to his music career, he expanded into acting, starring in television dramas such as My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, True Beauty, and Wonderful World. Thanks to his striking visuals, Korean media often dubbed him a “face genius,” and he frequently appeared in beauty rankings.
Academically, Cha Eun Woo majored in Performing Arts at Sungkyunkwan University. Media reports previously claimed he had an IQ of 142 and maintained strong academic performance during his school years. Besides Korean, he can communicate in English and Japanese and is able to play instruments such as the piano and guitar. Before the scandal erupted, he was often described as the quintessential “perfect son” — admired for both his looks and academic background.
The ongoing tax evasion scandal poses a major challenge to the carefully cultivated image he built over the years. In South Korea, issues related to financial obligations and legal compliance typically draw intense public scrutiny. If investigators conclude that there was deliberate fraud involving more than 10 billion won, the artist could face criminal penalties under current law.
The case remains under verification. Representatives for Cha Eun Woo have stated that they are cooperating with authorities to clarify the nature of the alleged violations and will respect any final ruling. Meanwhile, his entertainment activities are effectively on hold due to his ongoing military service. Developments in the case continue to be closely monitored in the early months of 2026, as the career of one of South Korea’s most prominent entertainment figures hangs in the balance.
