**Tragedy: Philippine Beauty Queen Shot Dead While Opening Door to Receive Flowers, Dies at Just 23**

Back in 2017, public opinion was shaken when Bulacan beauty queen **Mary Christine Balagtas** was brutally murdered in the Philippines. The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on April 5, 2017. Two men arrived at Balagtas’ private residence—about 40 kilometers from Manila—bringing fresh flowers and chocolates as a supposed gift. As the young beauty queen opened the door to accept the presents, one of the men suddenly pulled out a gun and shot her in the head.
She was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment but died on the way due to the severity of her injuries. Balagtas was only 23 years old and had not yet graduated from Regina Carmeli College in Bulacan. Family members, friends, and fans were left devastated, mourning a beautiful young woman whose life was filled with promise and a bright future.
Immediately after the attack, the two suspects fled on a motorcycle. Neighbors reported seeing them in the area several days before the crime. Police believed the perpetrators were hired professional killers who used a rented firearm to carry out the assassination. Investigators suspected the motive was revenge linked to a personal romantic dispute.
Mary Christine Balagtas—nicknamed “Tin”—was born in 1993. At just 16 years old, she entered the Lakambini Bulacan pageant in her hometown and won the top crown. In 2010, organizers merged Lakambini Bulacan with another competition to create a new pageant called Binibining Bulacan. Balagtas competed again and was once more crowned as a beauty queen.
At the time, the case shocked the public because of the perpetrators’ shocking brutality. Her life ended tragically at the young age of 23. Countless fans sent prayers and condolences to her family while calling for justice for the slain beauty queen.
This was not the first time a Philippine beauty queen had been targeted in a violent attack. In 2014, **Miss Earth Philippines 2006 Francis Dianne Cervantes** was also shot by an unknown assailant while riding a motorcycle in a town. She survived the assassination attempt, but the mastermind behind the attack has never been identified.
