Court Concludes Authenticity of Audio Recording in Kim Soo Hyun Case
South Korean authorities have concluded that it is impossible to determine whether artificial intelligence (AI) interfered with the audio file related to Kim Soo Hyun’s lawsuit.
According to the Korea Times, police said South Korea’s National Forensic Service concluded that they could not determine whether the audio recording released by the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute was manipulated by artificial intelligence (AI).
The controversial recording, released in May, allegedly features the late actress Kim Sae Ron. In the recording, she claims to have dated actor Kim Soo Hyun when they were minors. The National Forensic Service informed the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul last month that they had reached an “undetermined” conclusion regarding the possibility of manipulation of the recording.
According to officials, the agency conducted an analysis of the recording at the request of the police but stated they could not determine whether the recording had been edited due to technical limitations.
Previously, Kim Sae Ron’s family held a press conference with the Garo Sero Research Institute in May 2025, alleging that Kim Soo Hyun had a romantic relationship with Kim Sae Ron when she was a high school student. As evidence, the family released a portion of a 90-minute recording of a conversation between Kim and an acquaintance in New Jersey on January 10th, about a month before her death. In the recording, Kim Sae Ron stated that she had dated Kim Soo Hyun from high school until college. She added that, looking back, she felt she had been taken advantage of.

Kim Soo Hyun’s side denied the allegations, claiming the recording was created using artificial intelligence or similar technology, and filed a lawsuit against Kim Se-ui, head of the Garo Sero Research Institute, on charges including defamation under South Korea’s Information and Communication Network Act.
Police subsequently forwarded the recording to the National Forensic Service in August for analysis. Seoul Metropolitan Police Commissioner Park Jeong-woo stated at a regular press briefing that investigations into the parties involved had concluded and authorities were conducting a final analysis of the collected materials. He added that the investigation was in its final stages.
