At noon on January 31, MK reported that Park Shin Hye recently appeared as a guest on SBS’s My Grumpy Secretary. During the show, the actress revealed that she was repeatedly slapped hard while filming the drama Stairway to Heaven. In a specific scene, Park Shin Hye was struck forcefully—like a thunderous blow—by the character played by veteran actress Lee Hwi Hyang. Shockingly, to complete that single scene, Park Shin Hye was slapped a total of around 30 times.

Park Shin Hye Rushed to the Hospital After Collapsing on Set

Park Shin Hye’s mother tearfully shared:
“After seeing my daughter being slapped for real like that, even now I still don’t have the courage to rewatch that drama. She never clearly told us about the hardships and struggles of being an actress, so we had no idea at all. We only found out later when her manager told us. As a mother, my heart felt completely shattered.”

Park Shin Hye recalled:
“Senior Lee Hwi Hyang always hugged me after each slap. Looking back now, it must have hurt a lot back then, but at the time I didn’t even realize how much pain I was actually in.”

Her mother also made it clear that she harbors no resentment toward Lee Hwi Hyang:
“Thanks to seniors like her, Shin Hye is who she is today.”

On the same recent TV broadcast, Park Shin Hye also opened up about the hardships she faced as a child actress:
“Back then, I was scolded a lot. I often secretly ran off to cry by myself. I would go into the bathroom and cry my heart out, then wipe away my tears before coming back out. Sometimes, I even went all the way to the Han River just to cry.”

Previously, on TV Chosun’s Star Talk Show, guests discussed Lee Hwi Hyang’s long-known acting approach of delivering real slaps to her co-stars to achieve the most authentic performance. At the time, the guests argued that enduring a few real slaps was better than repeatedly reshooting the same scene over and over. Korean media also reported that Lee Hwi Hyang herself felt especially guilty toward Park Shin Hye after delivering those forceful slaps to her junior actress.
