The actress reportedly died from severe head and bodily injuries.
On January 5, HK01 reported that China’s entertainment industry was struck by another tragedy as young actress and director Lai Yuqing was confirmed to have passed away at the age of 23. According to reports, Lai fell from the first floor of a house in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Although she was rushed to hospital following the incident, she did not survive and was pronounced dead on January 2.
Based on the death certificate and emergency medical records provided by the hospital, Lai Yuqing died from severe head and multiple bodily injuries caused by a strong impact. Cambodian police have since launched an investigation into the unusual circumstances surrounding her fatal fall.
Preliminary information from investigators indicates that the incident occurred at a three-story residence. The ground floor was occupied by the homeowner. The first floor was rented by an Indian man named Jatla Siddartha and a Chinese woman named Li Fang, while the second floor was rented by a French man.
Security camera footage shows that at around 11:22 p.m. on December 29, 2025, the French tenant entered the house. At that time, Lai Yuqing was in the courtyard outside. The two were later seen entering the house together. At approximately 12:30 a.m. on December 30, audio of a conversation from an upper floor was captured by the camera, though the speakers could not be identified. Shortly afterward, Lai Yuqing fell from the building. The Indian and Chinese tenants immediately ran downstairs to check on her and took her to hospital for emergency treatment.
Police have questioned those involved and collected fingerprints at the scene as part of their ongoing investigation to determine the cause of Lai Yuqing’s fatal fall.
Following the tragic news, Lai Yuqing’s father flew to Phnom Penh to identify his daughter’s body and cooperate with investigators. He was reportedly devastated by her sudden death. Through tears, he said that his daughter had traveled to Cambodia with several friends to film short projects starting in 2024. However, he admitted that he was not fully aware of her work, daily life, or personal relationships while she was abroad.
Lai Yuqing was from Tianjin, China. She had studied overseas in New York and Los Angeles in the United States, as well as in Toronto, Canada. After returning to China, she worked on numerous short films and television series as a director, actress, and musician. Widely regarded as a talented and versatile rising star in the Chinese entertainment industry, Lai was seen as having a promising future. Several projects she produced were shortlisted for major international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, BFI Flare, and Sundance Ignite.
