A Filipino man was caught red-handed putting something disgusting in his food just to avoid paying a restaurant bill in China.
Just because he wanted a few dollars in compensation, a Filipino man in Shanghai came up with an unexpected trick: catching a cockroach and putting it in a hot pot, then falsely accusing the restaurant. The elaborate act was repeated at many restaurants, until security cameras exposed it all.
The incident was discovered when a man surnamed Song went to a restaurant and loudly complained that he had eaten a cockroach in a hot pot. He demanded compensation from the restaurant. However, the restaurant was not easily fooled. After checking the security camera system, they discovered an unusual detail: Song had secretly dropped a strange object (identified as a cockroach) into the hot pot right at the dining table.
Immediately after that, the incident was reported to the police. At the investigation agency, Song initially denied the crime but eventually had to bow his head and admit to his deceitful behavior. He confessed to having carried out similar tricks at at least four other hotpot restaurants, with a total extortion amount of up to 2,200 yuan. Notably, the amount he tried to extort in one instance alone exceeded 2,000 yuan.
Song’s plan was not accidental. He prepared cockroaches, carried them on his person, and secretly put them in the dishes. Each time, Song would create a perfect “drama” with a grimace, a fierce reaction, and a demand for compensation for his honor. If the restaurant refused, he would immediately threaten to report it to the police or make a fuss on social media to destroy the restaurant’s reputation.
However, the “cockroaches for money” trick eventually backfired. Song has now been arrested by the police, and will face charges of organized extortion.
The incident serves as a warning against illegal profiteering tricks, and emphasizes the role of monitoring and vigilance systems of business establishments in protecting reputation and fairness.
