Car ferry capsizes in South Korea, captain dies, 4 missing!!!
Authorities are searching for the remaining 4 missing people, while investigating the cause of the ferry capsize in the waters west of Seosan (South Korea).
Yonhap News reported that at 6:35 p.m. on December 30 (local time), an 83-ton car ferry capsized in the waters west of Seosan, about 100km southwest of Seoul (South Korea). At the time of the incident, the ferry was believed to be carrying 7 people, of whom 2 were rescued, while 5 are missing.
The Korean Coast Guard has mobilized about 20 ships to search overnight, and plans to deploy 5 helicopters in the morning and deploy all personnel to conduct searches in coastal areas.
According to authorities, rescuers searched near the accident site. However, strong currents from the rising waters are making rescue efforts more difficult.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok called on officials to do their utmost to support search and rescue operations.
“The Coast Guard and relevant agencies need to mobilize all available resources and personnel while ensuring the safety of rescuers, considering the strong currents in the area and the search being conducted at night,” Choi Sang-mok said.
According to the Korean Coast Guard, at 4:34 a.m. on December 31, the captain was found on the second floor of the ferry in a state of cardiac arrest and was later declared dead.
Currently, authorities are trying to find the remaining four missing people and are investigating the cause of the incident.
