The once-famous actor was caught working as a waiter, taking out the trash, washing dishes… at a restaurant.
Hong Kong actor Dai Yiu Ming works as a dishwasher and cleaner due to lack of work at the TV station.
According to St Headline on November 27, some viewers recognized Dai Yiu Ming when he served at a Hong Kong-style food and beverage restaurant in Wong Tai Sin. The actor took orders from customers, cleaned tables, took out the trash, and washed dishes.
On HK01, Dai Yiu Ming said he had been working for two weeks, in addition to serving customers, he was learning a trade, wanting to master making coffee and milk tea, so that he could start his own business later. The actor revealed that his acting career is unstable, sometimes he has work, sometimes he doesn’t. He still acts when he has the chance.
Dai Yiu Ming dressed simply while working as a restaurant employee, many viewers recognized the actor, at first they thought Dai Yiu Ming was filming a TV show. The actor said: “Honestly, I’m also shy when people ask, I usually laugh, saying that I’m helping my friends, overcoming psychological barriers is also a problem”.
When the image of the shop went viral on social media, Dai Yiu Ming wrote on Weibo: “I’m not ashamed of my job, I don’t steal or rob anything, just living my life is enough”.
Every day, Dai Yiu Ming wakes up at 5am, serving more than 10 hours a day. When working the night shift, he leaves the shop at 12pm. The actor often has back pain and dizziness when standing up and sitting down because of standing for a long time. After two weeks, Dai Yiu Ming realized that the food business is not easy, and understood why many restaurants closed, because the electricity and water costs alone are quite expensive.
Dai Yiu Ming’s daily wage is around 300 to 400 HKD, with one day off a week, and a monthly salary of more than 10,000 HKD. He mainly goes to work by subway, and only takes a taxi when he is tired, to save time walking.
Dai Yiu Ming has been active in the film industry for 32 years, is a familiar face on the Hong Kong screen, and has played supporting roles in more than 150 films.
In recent years, Dai Yiu Ming has played in The Legend of Fuyao, The Seven Princesses, Qing Gong, and The Beautiful Battlefield. This year, he has completed small roles in four films.
