South Korean actor Song Jae-rim has died at the age of 39.
According to multiple outlets including CNN and The Korea Herald, the former model turned actor was found dead in his apartment in Seoul on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The outlets reported that Jae-rim was discovered by a friend, whom he had planned to share lunch with. Seoul Seongdong police said there was no evidence of foul play at the property and that a note was also found, CNN added.
“Our initial investigation so far, has revealed no signs of criminal activity,” police told CNN

Depression among Korean celebrities is a significant concern, as the industry’s high-pressure environment, intense public scrutiny, and demanding schedules can contribute to mental health struggles. The combination of rigorous expectations and the stigma around mental health in Korea can make it especially hard for stars to seek support, leading many to suffer in silence.
Here are some key factors that make depression particularly challenging for Korean stars:
High-Pressure Standards: Korean celebrities often face extreme standards for beauty, performance, and public behavior. They are expected to maintain an idealized image, constantly fearing backlash or “scandals” if they fall short. This pressure to conform and appear perfect can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression.
Intense Work Schedules: Idols and actors in Korea typically have demanding schedules, which can include up to 16 hours or more of training, rehearsing, filming, or performing every day. Lack of sleep and proper rest exacerbates stress and can impact mental health, sometimes leading to burnout.
Public Scrutiny and Cyberbullying: Korean celebrities are under constant surveillance from fans, the media, and critics. Negative comments, especially online, can deeply affect their self-worth. Cyberbullying has unfortunately led to several cases where celebrities suffered from severe depression and, tragically, some even took their own lives.
Limited Mental Health Resources and Stigma: Mental health stigma remains a barrier in South Korea, despite some progress in recent years. Seeking help for depression or mental health issues can be seen as a weakness, causing many celebrities to hide their struggles instead of seeking treatment.
The Impact of Tragic Cases: Some well-known Korean stars have been open about their struggles with mental health, and sadly, there have been cases where celebrities have lost their lives to depression. These tragic events have sparked conversations about mental health in Korea, leading to a slow but hopeful change in attitudes and the support systems available.
Awareness and advocacy for mental health are increasing, partly due to celebrities speaking out about their own experiences. Some entertainment companies have also started to implement mental health support programs for their artists. However, for many, the weight of depression remains a constant and difficult battle.
