Choreographer Kim Yong Hyun Passes Away at 45, K-Pop Community Mourns
Kim Yong Hyun, the choreographer behind some of K-pop’s most iconic dance routines, has passed away at the age of 45. Known for his work on Infinite Challenge and with groups like Brown Eyed Girls, Kara, and Kahi, Kim’s sudden death has left the K-pop community in mourning.
According to reports on the 4th, Kim Yong Hyun passed away the previous morning. He was the mastermind behind the choreography for hit songs such as Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra,” Kara’s “Mister,” and T-ara’s “Bo Peep Bo Peep.” His signature moves, dubbed the “Cheeky Dance,” “Hip Dance,” and “Cat Dance,” became viral sensations, beloved by fans across the nation.
In 2014, Kim appeared on MBC’s Infinite Challenge during the Brazil World Cup episode, where he choreographed the “Kokkok Dance” for the show’s cheering squad. The dance gained popularity after being performed by celebrities like Yoo Jae Suk, Park Myung Soo, Son Ye Jin, and Jung Il Woo.
Following the news of his untimely passing, K-pop stars have expressed their condolences. Kahi shared her sorrow, saying, “I should have gone to see you last week when I heard the news. It’s too late now. It’s heartbreaking to hear this news about such a beautiful, young, and talented dancer like you. You look so pretty in your portrait, it’s hard to believe. Rest well, I will remember you as an amazing dancer,” alongside a video of her with Kim Yong Hyun.
Singer Kil Gun also paid tribute, stating, “Yong Hyun, you shined the most when you were dancing. We met every week, filmed reels, practiced dance, and our conversations fueled our dreams. Neither of us knew we would part so soon. My friend Yong Hyun, I’m so grateful to have known you, to have you as my choreographer, and for all the times you danced and cheered me on when I was struggling.”
