Actress Jang Shin Young has made it clear that she will not be divorcing her husband, Kang Kyung Joon, despite his involvement in a highly publicized affair scandal. On August 19, Jang took to Instagram to post a lengthy message, marking her first public statement since the controversy erupted about eight months ago.
Kang Kyung Joon was accused of being an adulterer last December and was sued for 50 million won (approximately $37,500 USD) in damages. The first trial took place on July 24 at the Seoul Family Court, where Kang’s side accepted the plaintiff’s claims, bringing the case to a close.
Kang Kyung Joon had previously appeared with Jang Shin Young on family variety shows such as SBS’s “Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 – You Are My Destiny” and KBS 2TV’s “The Return of Superman,” showcasing a happy remarried family. This made the public feel even more disappointment and betrayal. The couple has two children, the eldest son from Jang Shin Young’s previous marriage and a second son born in 2019.
In her post, Jang Shin-young apologized for disappointing those who supported her family and expressed deep regret for the pain caused by the scandal. “Hello, this is Jang Shin-young. I hope everyone has been well. It’s been a while since I last checked in, and I’m sorry to be greeting you after such unfortunate news. First of all, I apologize for disappointing everyone who has cared for and loved our family. Before anything else, I want to extend my deepest apologies to those who were directly affected by this situation. We received overwhelming support and encouragement, which we didn’t deserve, and I feel terribly sorry for letting down those who extended such warm and generous hearts to us.
During this time, I’ve been lost, unable to tell how time was passing, as I spent my days in a dark tunnel. One day, as I quietly closed my eyes, I found myself enjoying the peace and calm that had come after so long. I thought to myself that I wished time could stop forever at that moment. But then, piercing through that silence, my child called out to me, saying ‘Mom.’ In that moment, I was jolted awake by the sound of my child’s voice.
I realized then that I couldn’t allow myself to collapse. I have to protect my children. My life, which still has many days ahead, is precious, but even more precious are my children, whom I must protect. Perhaps it was the children who had the hardest time through all of this. I feel endlessly sorry as a parent for causing them to experience something they shouldn’t have had to go through, leaving them with emotional scars.
My husband and I had many conversations. He has reflected and regretted his actions countless times. We went through a period of suffering that’s difficult to put into words, but for the sake of our children, we have decided to continue living as a family.
I ask that you please refrain from excessive criticism toward my husband. I am worried that our children might come across such things. I kindly ask for your understanding.
Through this ordeal, many people have offered me comfort and support. Each warm word gave me the strength to stand back up. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who reached out. I hope that the next time I greet you, it will be with a smile and good news.
