BTS‘s RM recently opened up about the expectations placed on him for the last decade as a BTS member and leader.
He shared how as the leader, he is the one who is expected to represent the team and speak in interviews, speeches, and more.
Additionally, his fluency in English may give others an expectation that he will do speeches and more in English.
However, despite all of these expectations and burdens that have been placed on him from a young age (RM was a teenager at BTS’s debut), he shares that he’s just a normal young Korean man.

Though his life as an idol makes him live a slightly different life, at the end of the day, he is still the same person.
As their careers took off, suddenly, the members were placed on a pedestal and expected to say all the “right” things.
“For the past 10 years we felt this burden. At some point, we had to just be conscientious and different.”

Living with these extremely high expectations placed on him — not only as a member, but as a leader and spokesperson — RM shares that he just couldn’t handle it.
“If I kept caring about what everyone else thought, if I kept going like this, I just… I felt like I would want to die.”

His music, including his latest album Right Place, Wrong Person, is a way for him to open up and be able to say what’s on his mind as an artist and also as a person.
