Queen of Tears’s Actress Na Young Hee Reveals She Was Once Kidnapped for 8 Hours
“At that time, I thought, ‘Oh, this is the end for me. My life is ending,’” the actress recalled.
K-drama actress Na Young Hee recently recalled a traumatic event in her life, which involved her kidnapping almost two decades ago.
In an interview with the YouTube channel Now Baek Ji-Yeon, the 62-year-old Queen of Tears actress recalled the incident that happened in Cheongdam-dong, a ward in Seoul’s Gangnam district where kidnappings were once rampant in broad daylight.
During the segment of the online show, Young Hee looked back on her harrowing experience when she was leaving her apartment for a golf session 20 years ago. According to her, a person had opened the back door of her car, which she assumed was someone she knew. It ended up being a stranger who came armed.
“I was surprised that there was a boy riding on it. When I looked here, they came in with a knife and then I was kidnapped,” she recalled. “At that time, I thought, ‘Oh, this is the end for me. My life is ending.’”
Because of the rampant kidnappings then, Young Hee and her colleagues had previously discussed a plan if the incident were to occur and had devised to use coded signals like “I need to pick up Cindy.” However, when it did happen, she was left stunned.
The actress tried to keep her composure despite the dangerous situation. “I got dragged around for several hours, and it turned out there were four kidnappers. I gave them my [credit] card at that time.”
Young Hee was also able to question the perpetrators’ reasoning behind the crime. “The guys were very young. When I asked, ‘Why are you guys doing this?’, they complained about needing money for entertainment purposes or the feelings they had when they were young,” she said, as translated by Kbizoom.
“I didn’t know why I said it but I told them, ‘You didn’t receive love at home and lived with various dissatisfactions so you ended up going outside doing such things. All of this is the responsibility of the adults, and I feel so sorry about that.”
Young Hee narrated that one of the kidnappers had suggested keeping her for another day, while another one had wanted to let her go. Eventually, she surrendered two of her cards. “They released me on the condition that I wouldn’t report them. The kidnappers covered my face with something and I said I wouldn’t look at them for fear that I might remember their faces later on. I didn’t let them remove the cover.”
At the end of eight hours, the kidnappers ended up dropping her off in Suwon, a city in the Gyeonggi province of South Korea. The actress confessed that she was shaken after they left her, realizing the depth of the situation. “It wasn’t just my legs were shaking. When I was inside the car, I felt rather calm. However, after they released me, the fear overwhelmed me. I couldn’t move my legs.”
Upon reflection, Young Hee revealed that the kidnapping incident left her traumatized, as she couldn’t take elevators or taxis even after a decade.
