A famous actor announced his engagement to a Japanese woman he met online
Actor Chen Xi has announced his engagement to his girlfriend of four years Mimi, a non-celebrity Japanese woman he met through an online language exchange course.
“From the Land of the Rising Sun, across the seas, and to England, thank you for being my anchor, my compass, and my home from home,” the actor wrote on Instagram on May 5. According to The Straits Times, he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in arts management in the U.K.
“I know it wasn’t easy deciding to follow me, and indeed, we’ve faced tumultuous times with constantly changing contexts,” he continued. “Despite the variations and shifting environments, having you by my side has been the constant.”
Chen concluded his post with a message in Japanese: “Let’s write the next chapter together.”
The post was accompanied by several photographs, including one showing Chen and his fiancée from behind in an English chapel, and a photo of an engagement ring and a signet ring he designed for his family.
Singaporean news site 8days reported that Chen revealed Mimi currently works in IT. He described his fiancée as someone who is “stronger than him.”
In a previous interview, he shared that he and Mimi have common interests in drawing and reading. He considered her his soulmate and said he has met her parents in Japan, while his parents have warmly embraced Mimi as a family member.
Chen mentioned they plan to hold a traditional Japanese wedding in Mimi’s hometown of Kyushu, and that Mimi is learning Mandarin while he improves his Japanese to better communicate with their families.
Chen, 33, is the son of Singaporean actors Edmund Chen and Xiang Yun. His younger sister Chen Yixin is also an actress.
